So I finally sat down and read Seduth, using the 3D glasses, no less.
It was a very enjoyable experience. The 3D worked better than I expected, apart from some panels when I didn't see it and got 2 outlines on things. The art was great, I love that 2-page spread where you see the main character floating with all sorts of things and images floating around him.
I can see the story working better had it been a bit more developed, maybe for a couple more issues, it felt like it rushed a little and used some pretty generic elements, which I wasn't so used to seeing them being used by Clive in their traditional sense, like the character being crucified in an inverted cross - pretty used up, especially in connection with a generic Evil Darkness. The blood into crystals was slightly off-putting as it was just so... unbelievable. Anyway, I felt like there was room for more development in that story, and it would have been a bit more meaningful and maybe we'd be able to connect to the characters a bit more. As it was, it seemed like a very generic 2D-characters, almost like a fable, and I can see it trying to go that way, the way of metaphor and fable. But still I think its weak spot was the story. It just reads through in 5-10 minutes, tops and you come out of it slightly surprised at how light it was. Also, the ending with the whole 'full circle' thing of going back to the beginning, has been used to exhaustion. I never, to this day saw a Clive Barker story where the metamorphosis didn't go all the way, where the transformation of the character and the world didn't go through to something grander and even over-the-top; and here, the climax is just that it abruptly flares out and enters a loop and doesn't go anywhere. It felt like a bit of a cop-out.
This said, it is the art which makes us go back to the comic and enjoy all the minute details and also the 3D effect.
As with all gimmick-oriented comics, this one suffers a bit from that, in the sense that something appears to be lacking, and at some point, we're supposed to try to make up for it with the 3D technique.
That's my main problem with Seduth. _________________ Hellraiser Gallery: http://www.hellraisergallery.blogspot.com |

| i agree. it's a very cool comic but it really did need to be developed in more than one 64 page story. the 3D artwork they used is entirely groundbreaking. whatever technique they developed and used, seduth was the first for it to be done, but it really should have been made into a mini series. i still like it though. |
